Why does it always have to be “Death to so-and-so”? Is there no middle ground between “Long live Imam Khomeini” and “Death to the dictator”? Why not something a little more constructive, like “Stop beating and killing unarmed protestors for no damn reason”?
With temperatures dipping to a nippy 3°C on National Students’ Day, […]

did stanley kubrick fake the moon landing?
July 30th, 2009 · 9 Comments
Probably not. But tell that to this guy.
Jay Weidner at Reality Sandwich compares the cinematic style of Stanley Kubrick’s work to the famous moon landing footage, and says he’s convinced beyond any doubt that Kubrick was enlisted to show up the Russians, NASA stole flying saucer technology from the Nazis, and JFK was assassinated […]

flickering pictures: a weapon of mass destruction?
May 19th, 2009 · 7 Comments
From Slashdot:
“Law prof Eugene Volokh blogs about a US House of Representatives bill proposed by Rep. Linda T. Sanchez and 14 others that could make it a federal felony to use your blog, social media like MySpace and Facebook, or any other Web media ‘to cause substantial emotional distress through “severe, repeated, and hostile” speech.’ […]

afghanistan quarantines its only pig (also, everyone calm the hell down)
May 8th, 2009 · No Comments
So the posting here has been a little slow for the last week or so — mainly because the rest of my life has been anything but. I’ve got reams of work to plow through and don’t even really have time to be posting right now, but this story was exactly the kind of […]

booty-shaking burger commercial for kids
April 24th, 2009 · 7 Comments
So you’re an advertising exec at Burger King. In these tough economic times, you reason, Burger King needs a children’s commercial that will grab attention and boost sales. Kids, you know, like Spongebob Squarepants. They also like rap. And lord knows, they totally dig a nice big bedonkadonk. There’s really […]

vatican rejects obama’s pro-abortion ambassador
April 14th, 2009 · 4 Comments
The Vatican has rejected yet another potential U.S. ambassador — Caroline Kennedy this time — because even though she’s Catholic, she isn’t anti-abortion. And as if to drive home the point, the Vatican chose Easter to express its outrage at Washington’s “calculated insult to the Holy See.”
Washington’s previous nominee, a former lawyer for Reagan […]

10,000 murders per orgasm
April 2nd, 2009 · No Comments
Writing for an awesome-sounding newspaper called the Tulane Hullabaloo, Jeff Silberman has put together a fine op-ed piece on the silliness of a media culture that bombards us with violent music, TV shows and video games but gets squeamish when somebody says the word “nipple.”
Here’s an excerpt:
On television, for every 10,000 murders, we see one […]

bush shoe-thrower gets 3 years in prison
March 12th, 2009 · 3 Comments
Remember Muntadhar al-Zeidi, the Iraqi reporter who last December threw his shoes at George W. Bush, yellng “this is from the widows and orphans and all those killed in Iraq”? That gesture just earned him three years in prison, and something tells me that if he’d been a white guy tossing shoes at Bush […]

north korea threatens to attack civilian planes in international airspace
March 5th, 2009 · No Comments
To voice its displeasure about joint South Korean-U.S. military exercises, North Korea is threatening to shoot down civilian airplanes that venture near its airspace — even if they don’t actually enter it. Russia, China, South Korea and Japan may have something to say about that.
From the BBC:
In the latest of a series of bellicose […]

fertility clinic promises better-looking babies
February 26th, 2009 · 6 Comments
A creepy-sounding outfit called the Fertility Institutes is offering parents the controversial chance to screen for blond-haired, blue-eyed, fair-skinned babies, and lots of people aren’t happy about it. For a fee, the Institutes promise to let you choose your baby’s features through “pre-implantation genetic diagnosis” — sort of implying that ugliness needs diagnosing. […]
