ukrainian artist bends sand to her storytelling will

January 29th, 2010 · 1 Comment

Sand animation is the art of storytelling through continuously created and recreated images in sand, and there may be no one better at it than Kseniya Simonova. In the video above, she steals the show on Ukraine’s equivalent of the America’s Got Talent TV show, and has the judges and audience in tears as […]

neat-o graph shows how americans spend their day

August 10th, 2009 · No Comments

The top-notch Web design team at the New York Times has put together a very neat interactive graph highlighting the ways different groups of Americans spend their day. Here are some interesting facts, with the usual caveat about correlation not equaling causation and all that:

People with two children are more likely to be actively […]

27 economic downturn charts, graphs and infographics

March 17th, 2009 · No Comments

FlowingData seems to have gotten itself up and running again, and contrary to my previous post, it features 27 neat-o infographics that explain the worldwide financial meltdown, not 16. Very much worth a look.

awesome gravity-defying photography

February 13th, 2009 · No Comments

There are lots of folks out there who sharpen two images on their mom’s computer and then fancy themselves PhotoShop “artistes,” but let’s face it: most of them are crap. This guy is decidedly not crap.
Check out a montage of Li Wei’s work at 56minus1.
Thanks, Nick!

neat-o 3d bookcase painting

January 27th, 2009 · 3 Comments

Nicholas Branson, a Digger and FP reader, sent me a link to this very cool video of a 3D painting that seems to change pretty dramatically depending on your perspective. The painting is apparently on display in the Business Design Centre in London.
Thanks, Nicholas!

greek riots: best photojournalism i’ve seen in a long time

December 16th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Yesterday’s Boston Globe featured an unbelievable collection of photos of the ongoing anarchy in Athens. Nearly any one of these shots, if you took them, would be the best photo you’d ever take.
The riots were sparked by the police shooting of Alexis Grigoropoulos, a 15-year-old boy who was allegedly with other youths who threw […]

gorgeous buddhist beer-bottle temple

November 26th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Knowing that this story combines three of my favourite things — beer, Eastern philosophy and neat-o whatnot — a buddy of mine sent me some info about this most postworthy endeavour.

Lloyd Alter at Treehugger reports:

Fifty years ago the Heineken Beer company looked at reshaping its beer bottle to be useful as a building block. It […]

animated 24-hour map of world air traffic

October 8th, 2008 · No Comments

I’m not usually this philosophical in the morning, but watching this video I kept thinking about how incredibly neat it is that humans have created a new circulatory system for the Earth, with ebbs and flows regulated by the planet’s rotation. There’s something beautiful about this.
It’s also instructive to see that Africa, with its […]

stories told by book spines

September 26th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Nina Katchadourian creates very strange art. She does everything from mending tattered spiderwebs to projecting films onto her teeth, and though I don’t always get it, I almost always love it. Have a look at her book spine storytelling series, and then check out the rest of her site for a peek at […]

new hosted photographer: maïra christine

September 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

Maïra Christine is the sixth photographer to add her work to our fast-growing galleries so far. I really like her work, and it’s good to see someone reviving what sometimes seems like the lost art of the B&W photo.
Check out some of the others if you haven’t already.
From Maïra’s bio:

Ever since she can remember, Maïra […]
