indian “people’s car” costs $2,000

Boasting an impressive 51.7 mpg (21.97km/litre) in city driving, the Tata Nano might be the cheapest and cleanest production car in the world. And at $2,000 apiece, India’s roads are going to see a lot of them.

The Nano has five seats, a maximum speed of 60 mph (about 97km/h), twice the fuel efficiency of a Civic sedan and an itsy-bitsy 66-horsepower engine — more than enough for daily commutes and grocery runs.

Tata is targeting the new middle class of workers in the IT and pharmaceutical sectors, but while a $2,000 car is about $8,000 cheaper than the least expensive car in North America, it’s still four times what a typical Indian earns in a year. Though India is working hard to project an image of high technology and unbridled growth, the fact remains that the average Indian still spends 52% of his income on food.
