This would be hilarious if it weren’t so terrifying.
The BBC reports:
HMS Vanguard and Le Triomphant were badly damaged in the crash in heavy seas earlier this month.
[…] The submarines are equipped with sonar to detect other vessels nearby but our correspondent said it be might the case that the anti-sonar devices, meant to hide the submarines from enemies, were “too effective”.
The accident happened somewhere in the Atlantic, and although both subs were powered by nuclear reactors and carrying nuclear missiles, both governments insist that “nuclear security had not been compromised.” Not that they’d tell us if it had.
In case you’re wondering, the Vanguard and Le Triomphant can carry up to 64 nuclear warheads between them — more than enough to cause a stir in the event of an explosion or a radiation leak.
