I just read the news, and I gotta say, it made me a little bit sad. Polaroid has announced that it will no longer manufacture the gee-whiz insta-photo film that made it a household name.
Though it’s leaving the photography business, Polaroid will continue to make portable DVD players that you’ve never heard of, as well as the PoGo — a printer for cell phones that’s kind of neat but really doesn’t seem all that useful. (Why would you want to print the tiny pictures you took on your 2.0-megapixel phone?)
From CNN:
From David Hockney’s famous Polaroid art compositions, to the line, “Shake it like a Polaroid picture” from OutKast’s hit “Hey Ya!”, Polaroid instant film has embedded itself in popular culture.
The public’s reaction to Polaroid’s announcement reflects that. Blogs lament the loss. Polaroid-fan groups have formed on Facebook. On Amazon.com, a four-pack of 10 exposures is selling for $64 — nearly $1.60 per photo.

I have a fond long-ago memory of a gentleman in line at a Ralph’s market in Hollywood (Rock-N-Roll-Ralph’s, to be precise.
He was, at roughly 2AM, purchasing 4 cans of Reddi-Whip, a box of 24 Trojan-Enz, and 2 boxes of Polaroid film.
You KNEW that man was gonna have a good night.
Lights, down, little naughty box!
