Equal parts gimmicky and awesome, the Black Cab Sessions feature musicians from Lykke Li and the Cold War Kids to the Raveonettes and Martha Wainwright, all playing in the back seats of London’s iconic black cabs. The videos on the official site can sometimes be more than a little choppy, but the Youtube versions seem to work fine.
Many thanks to Genevieve D. Markle and all the other good good people at The Tragically Unhip for stumbling across this!
Says Markle:
Indie music fans who haven’t yet discovered the Black Cab Sessions ought to do themselves a favour by getting in on the best-kept secret that won’t stay secret for much longer. This alternative, slightly claustrophobic, and almost guerrilla form of music recording permits solo artists or select band members to perform one song in one take in the back of one black cab while driving through the sights and sounds of London. Then it’s over and everyone hugs goodbye, and the video is edited and uploaded onto the Black Cab website shortly thereafter.
The video up top, by the way, features the excellent and bushy Bon Iver doing an acoustic version of “Creature Fear.” It’s admittedly not his best song, but I defy you to check out “Skinny Love” and say you don’t like it.

Ah, so it wasn’t just my slow internet connection causing the vids to be choppy. Will change to the YouTube versions ASAP. Thanks for the plug! (Like I’m going to argue with someone who repeatedly gets picked up by CNN. Duh.)
