For the last nine months, I’ve been running this little site for fun, as a writing exercise, and mostly as a labour of love. For some reason — likely a neurosis of some kind — I just really love digging through the many fascinating stories that don’t make it to our TV screens, and sharing them with folks who might not otherwise see them. I’d never really planned to put any ads on here unless traffic went way up, but hey, traffic is way up, so thanks to all of you who’ve made that happen. Seriously, thank you. You rock.
Anyway, I’ve stuck those Google ads over there on the left, and I tried to choose the least in-your-face format and colour scheme they had. I know that discreet ads probably won’t rack up a ton of cash for me, since you have to actually see them to click on them, but I also know that most of you haven’t come here to buy antique coins, and frankly I’ll be happy if this pays for a bus pass every few months.
On a side note, the “smart” Google ads are hawking “viscous piston fillers and high volume capping” on a post about a Buddhist temple made entirely of beer bottles. Not the most auspicious start, but we’ll give it some time…
Again, thanks for making this project a success — you’ve all made a little blogger happy.

Ha, thanks! I’m actually not allowed to ask people to click on them, and Google’s apparently pretty strict with the rules! I’m also not sure how much I make per click — I think it depends on the ad, but from what I understand it could be anywhere from 5 to 50 cents.
And there’s something just not right about the phrase “viscous piston filler.”

Keep up the good work with the site! I always enjoy reading it.
I find the ads well placed and blend in nicely.

Mark, please email me and tell me how one goes about putting those awful Google ads on one’s site. I’ve still got a little punk rock left in me and I hate the idea of selling out, but if I could do it exactly the way you just did, that would be ideal. Help!
