indian girls burned alive for visiting boys

November 11th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Two teenaged girls were brutally killed in the Indian village of Kaluvas during the Hindu festival of Diwali, apparently because they had visited boys to wish them a happy holiday. The girls’ fathers were reportedly part of the mob that killed them.

The Times of India reports:

Rajender Shivran, who claims he couldn’t sleep under the weight of the unspeakable crime, [contacted the police] saying two teenaged girls of the Dhanak community were “attacked by machetes and axes and stones as soon as they got down from a car on Diwali night.”

“The villagers had waited for them after getting wind of their movements. They were unconscious, but alive, when some of the men brought out jars of kerosene and set them on fire.”

[…] “‘Everyone knows about it but is keeping quiet as most are in it together and those who dare to speak about it have been threatened with dire consequences.’”

I haven’t found any mention of this story in the non-Indian media, and even the handful of Indian articles are near carbon-copies of each other, suggesting that only one reporter actually covered the story, and had his article poached by several outlets.

None of them even bothers to mention the girls’ names.

This is unspeakably disgusting. What demented dillusions led to this act?
