congratulations america, from the rest of us

Not that it’s any of my business, since I’m not American, but on behalf of the rest of the world, congratulations on choosing the best person for the job. We — and 52% of America — could be wrong about him, and we’ll have four years to find out, but in terms at least of repairing America’s broken image across an increasingly hostile globe, this was a giant leap forward. On policy, well, we’ll have to see, but most of us are every bit as hopeful as America is this morning.

And what’s more, on equality of opportunity, we’re coming to the startling realization that we can learn from you. The election of a black man to the U.S. presidency, on the strength of his ideas and the unifying power of his conviction, is a model for the rest of us and a strong reminder to those who thought otherwise that America is still a land of freedom and opportunity. If I were American, I’d be a bloody proud one today.
