hockey night in canada’s next theme song?

A little while ago, the CBC sold the rights to the old Hockey Night in Canada theme song that so many of us canuck (and northern U.S.) kids grew up with, and launched a nationwide competition to come up with a replacement. The winner gets a cool $100,000.

One of the entries is from Asher Vijay Yampolsky, a buddy of mine and a budding composer who got 40 of his musician friends together out of the blue to record a full-fledged original orchestral composition. Voting starts October 4, but in the meantime you can have a listen here.

Asher says:

The short version of the story is that during my too-short trip to the Art of Living centre near Shawinigan, this nice theme popped into my head. I kept singing it to myself, and finally, I wrote it down… and composed my anthem… for an orchestra. So, this past Thursday, I managed to gather 40 musicians to read, rehearse and record my piece in one evening. It was glorious. I couldn’t believe how many people came to help! I’m still in awe of the whole thing! What’s more, it was absolutely incredible hearing this tune that only lived in my head come to life before me.

In terms of listener ratings, Asher is currently in 26th place among more than 24,000 entries. Impressive!

    !!!

Thank you so much, Mark!!! I can’t believe you posted this!

By the way, the link you posted to the old theme song is hilarious! It’s one of the awful recent arrangements with guitar and… breaking glass? Wild.
