British Columbians have been fishing human right feet out of the ocean since February — four of them altogether, all still in socks and running shoes and severed at the ankle. Two days ago the pattern changed when a left foot washed ashore.
No one knows who the feet belonged to, or how they ended up on Canada’s western shore, but the cops are baffled and the story is starting to make headlines around the world.
From The Independent:
Potential explanations have proliferated, with suggestions including Mafia killings, a people-smuggling attempt gone wrong, or a boating accident. Police say they are treating the latest find as a criminal inquiry.
“We are certainly not discounting the possibility that this may be linked to the other recovered feet,” the local police chief, Sharlene Brooks, said. “This might take a long time. It is going to be pretty difficult.”
But the quote — and understatement — come courtesy of Curtis Ebbesmeyer, an oceanographer and author who for some reason is writing a book on the miscellaneous items that float around our oceans: “The rate at which the body parts is washing up is starting to be alarming.”
