Sorry for the spotty posing lately — it’s been a crazy busy time work-wise, but for some reason I just can’t stop grinning. I must like my job or something.

Now that you’re paying $60 to gas up your Civic, I thought you might like to know where a good chunk of your gas money is going. As Emirati billionaires continue the battle to outdo each other with ever-higher skyscrapers, Dubai is getting ready for another super-chic — if somewhat less phallic — display of oil-driven opulence, and on a man-made island, no less.

Enter the Dubai Opera House, with its “distinctive series of softly undulating roofs.” More than just a venue for performances, the building will also house an art gallery and an academy for the arts. Click the image above for a larger picture.

The city is also preparing for a wave of new 600-metre “supertowers,” with such creative names as EP 07, EP 15, and the AC Towers. When you’ve got this many skyscrapers, you apparently don’t even bother to name them anymore. And 600 metres, by the way, is 30 per cent taller than the Empire State Building.

If you’re like me and you love architects’ scaled-down building models, check out this series of photographs, hosted by designboom.

    I hope it sinks.
HAHAHAhahahahahahaa! No no no. I’m kidding. I have to say: I’m glad SOMEBODY’S spending on the arts.
