The 40,000 residents of Muskogee, Oklahoma have elected 19-year-old John Tyler Hammons as mayor. A crossover candidate if there ever was one, Hammons heads both the Young Republicans and the Young Democrats at his college. He garnered 69 per cent of the vote, beating three-time mayor Herschel McBride.
And for all you eligible young ladies out there, Muskogee may be worth a stop on your next swing through through Oklahoma. “Right now I’m between girlfriends,” Hammons told the media. “I’m looking to fill that position.”
Hammons isn’t the youngest mayor in U.S. history — five 18-year-olds have headed municipal governments, and an 11-year-old boy named Brian Zimmerman won the mayorship of the unincorporated Texas town of Crabb, though the state apparently didn’t recognize his victory.
