swiss bank plugs wikileaks (sort of)

February 19th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Swiss Bank Julius Baer has successfully petitioned a California court to shut down Wikileaks.org, a neat-o site where whistleblowers can use a secure connection to anonymously leak sensitive information about their employers’ shady dealings.

According to the CBC, Wikileaks says that the bank is acting to prevent the leaking of “documents allegedly relating to bank business […]

update: burmese rambo movement even bigger than i thought

February 19th, 2008 · No Comments

Seems like the Myanmar government is more scared of the “Rambo movement” than I thought. The Southeast Asian newspaper Irawaddy reports today that:

Burma’s Press Scrutiny and Registration Board has ordered all journals and newspapers in the country to publish a government article criticizing the movie, Rambo, this week, according to a source close to […]

burmese dissidents rally around rambo 4,
risking jailtime or worse

February 18th, 2008 · No Comments

(Is it just me, or are fishing commandos the latest craze?)

Fresh off the success of Rocky Balboa, Sylvester Stallone has just released Rambo, a.k.a. Rambo 4, a.k.a. Rambo: Pearl of the Cobra, whatever that means. Normally I wouldn’t give two whits about this sort of thing, but somewhere behind the blood and gore of […]

dispatches from india #6

February 18th, 2008 · No Comments

While I get things up and running around here, I thought I’d post my India notes, scribbled and scrawled with love, inspiration and revelation during the five weeks I spent scurrying around India last year. They should give you an idea of the flavour I’ll be trying to create here. Sorry for the redundancy if […]

an olympic boycott would leave no winners

February 17th, 2008 · 2 Comments

When I decided to start this site, I told myself that I wouldn’t be yelling out chest-thumping opinions on subjects I know nothing about. I’ll really work to avoid the tired old “injustice this” and “fascist that,” and instead I’ll try to just put some interesting ideas out there, perhaps letting you know what […]

I’m off to a wedding so no time to comment, but this cartoon by the Guardian’s Steve Bell speaks for itself. Background info here if you like.

texas legalizes sex toys on valentine’s day

February 16th, 2008 · No Comments

Coincidence? I think not.

Thanks to a U.S. federal appeals court ruling that struck down the Texas law, Mississippi, Alabama and Virginia are now the only states where they’re still illegal. Amazingly, the judges split 2 to 1.

Says the Statesman:

The state also argued in a brief that Texas has legitimate “morality based” reasons for […]

all-girl gang deals vigilante justice in india

February 15th, 2008 · 3 Comments

The Guardian and BBC ran excellent features today on the Gulabi Gang - hundreds of pink-clad rural Indian women who use sticks and hatchets to fight injustice, vigilante-style.

From the Guardian:

Gulabi means pink, and refers to the electric shade of the uniform worn by the 500-plus members, who hail from Banda’s arid villages. The women have […]

phantom problem haunts flickeringpictures.com

February 15th, 2008 · No Comments

Update: I think I found the problem - please let me know if you see a difference.

If you’ve been having timeouts or slow load times here, I’m really sorry for the problem - it seems like the site gets painfully slow for a while and then is fine again for hours. I’ve been in […]
