Seems like the Myanmar government is more scared of the “Rambo movement” than I thought. The Southeast Asian newspaper Irawaddy reports today that:
Burma’s Press Scrutiny and Registration Board has ordered all journals and newspapers in the country to publish a government article criticizing the movie, Rambo, this week, according to a source close to the media in Burma.
Wow. An excerpt from the government-mandated review reads:
“Rambo is a man who does not smile. He is an aggressive, hot-blooded man who seems to have a mental illness. The movie made me cry in my heart watching this poor man who is obviously crazy. But I will tell you seriously, the movie Rambo is as humorous as the ‘Bruce,’ ‘Evan’ and ‘God Almighty’ movies.”
While it’s probably safe to say that this guy won’t be stealing Roger Ebert’s job anytime soon, this does seem to indicate that there’s an even bigger movement around this movie than the Western media are claiming.
Disclaimer: in the interest of accuracy, I could only find the one report on this. That may be partly because Burma isn’t the easiest place to publish online information that the government might find embarrassing. Though it certainly seems in keeping with the Myanmar government’s track record, it might be best not to swear it’s true until it’s verified elsewhere.
